Is there then a relation or reaction to this control that finds an outlet in violence esp in movies, films, video games, the media (not the decent newspapers) etc. Does control such as  convinient terrorism, big brother, global warming, in other words lies, do these profit motives create a hysteria that relates to the plague of violence that seems to come out of every movie, game etc, just trying to see rational possible explanation to the reasons other than, well we just love to see 200 people shot in the opening. Or as human life do we have an in-built need for violence, in the same way as those apes  from 2001, but please have a look at the links.

Firstly well done Claire for providing a very interesting topic for us to talk about last Thursday.

Next week I’d like to take some photos or possibly record the sessions so we can evaluate how well the presentations are going, were they clear, were they concise, did they engage the audience, did they teach us something we didn’t already know?

Hopefully by the time your assessment comes you will be confident at speaking clearly.

Next week is Sven’s topic, he needs to post what this is asap so we can have a little look into it.

Also we need to spend some time on Thursday looking into your reading lists and seeing where improvements can be made.

When Claire posts up her topic it is mandatory that you all reserch a point, print it out and bring it to the discussion next week. We all need to start participating more.

Russell did really well today, obviously spent alot of time researching and delivered a comprehansive talk, however some visuals would have been usefull, something up on the wall, the main points posted so we could all see them.

Lisa was a good chair person but we all need to start contributing and joining in the debate.

Lets pull our socks up.

Internet tracking cookies monitor our webpages, customer surveys note down our brand choices and shopping preferences and whole schools of applied psychology are devoted solely to convincing us we should part with our cash for a product.

The scariest part of it all is that its so seductive, we don’t even care that its happening, if we’re even aware it is happening at all. Its nice to shop and spend.

I found a great excerpt from “The Golden City” which is a brilliant book by John Twelve Hawks, set in a not too distant future of centralised power and social control. So I thought I’d type it up real quick for you.

“- allows us to control the behaviour of people, both as workers and as consumers. Our citizen in the cubicle is essentially powerless, but he is still able to express himself in the shopping mall. Freedom of choice becomes the freedom to buy, and our new system gives us powerful tools to manipulate consumer behaviour. When our citizen walks through the streets, billboards will recognise his face. Eventually, a centralised computer base will know all of our citizen’s previous purchases and will make sure he is never offered a product that will change his view of the world. It will be like listening to a radio station always tuned to music that sounds pleasantly familiar.

“So this is what I’m proposing – not a prison of sullen unproductive prisoners, but an interconnected structure that creates obedient workers and trained consumers. This worldwide system will guarentee more money and comfort for yourself and your family. We’ll get the stability of the old Panopticon – with a happy face.”
